No permit is required by domestic as well as foreign tourists to visit Assam. However, foreign tourists must have an Indian Visa. Visa Requirement:

Foreign Nationals desirous of coming into India are required to possess a valid passport of their country and a valid Indian Visa. There is no provision of 'Visa on Arrival' in India and no fee is charged for immigration facilities at the airports. Foreign passengers should ensure that they are in possession of valid Indian Visa before they start their journey to India except nationals of Nepal and Bhutan who do not require visa to enter India and nationals of Maldives who do not require visa for entry in India for a period up to 90 days (a separate Visa regime exists for diplomatic/official passport holders).

Persons of Indian Origins and Non-Resident Indians who possess either OCI (Overseas Indian Citizenship) or PIO card don't need Indian Visa. OCI and PIO give them the freedom to visit India without visa. OCI and PIO cards are multi-purpose life long visa for visiting India.

However, those NRIs and PIOs who don't have OCI or PIO card can apply for and get Indian visa through the procedure mentioned above.

ECNR is Extended to 173 Nations


The ministry of overseas Indian affairs has extended the Emigration Check Not Required (ECNR) status to 173 Countries. With the new Central notification, emigration clearance or suspension of the emigration check requirement will be applicable only in 19 countries of the world. This include the United Arab Emigrates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Malaysia, Libya, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, Brunei, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Syria, Lebanon, Thailand and Iraq, where emigration is banned.

In case of need or desire to overstay you are advised to contact the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office.

It is advisable to avail pre-paid taxis./ auto rickshaws or pay by meter or ask for fare chart.
It is advisable to shop at Govt. Emporia / Fixed Price shops to ensure quality & reasonable prices.
Please check power voltage before using electrical instruments. (220 / 240 V. are available in Assam )
Keep your valuables in hotel lockers/safe deposit vaults.
You are advised to contact the nearest Govt. of Assam Tourist Office / State approved Travel Agents / Tour Operators for local sightseeing & excursion tours.
Always hire Govt. approved tourist guide invariably carry an identity Card
Check about photography permission / filming at any monument. Contact the nearest Government of India Tourist Office/ Police Station State Government Tourist Office.
Change money only at authorized Banks.
